About Social Justice Lab

SJL is a collaborative space where individuals from all walks of life can work together to identify areas of injustice and develop new approaches to solvable problems. We believe in gathering input and building alliances across communities, cultures, races, ethnicities, socio-economic status, policies, and politics.

Social Justice Lab believes in the dynamism of diversity in all forms. In that light, we do not shy away from conflicting world views or knowledge horizons. Instead, challenging conversations that involve differing ideologies or worldviews are embraced and facilitated to ensure that prescribed outcomes are not the goal. We believe this approach creates the conditions for more open-ended and innovative idea sharing and problem solving.

Leadership Development

SJL is building a slate of progressive elected and community leaders who come from the communities they want to serve. Leadership training would start with identifying leaders at the 7th and 8th-grade levels and begin to involve these young people in extracurricular leadership training activities that will include opportunities to interact and learn from diverse professionals in numerous fields and settings. Youth might apprentice with a DJ, actor, or athlete, or intern with a community group or local campaign.

By adapting best practices from existing youth leadership projects, SJL will develop a continuum of development activities and services that eventually provide each youth participant with a customized path toward their own chosen leadership position and the skillset and experiential knowledge to give back to younger generations.

THE WALTER STAFFORD PROJECT: RAcial INEQUALITY IN NEW YORK CITY

Based at New York University, this project brings together specialists from a broad spectrum of disciplines to study the historical and ongoing causes, trends, and consequences of racial inequality in New York City. SJL will convene community conversations this spring to discuss the findings presented in the upcoming anthology. Our hope is to impact policy prescriptions and solutions to the many issues presented in the anthology. Walter Stafford Project at NYU »
