SJL is a social justice incubator that develops new projects and tomorrow’s leaders. We work with grass roots organizations and corporate funders; local communities and major celebrities; high school students and experts from all walks of life who combine their knowledge, resources, passion, and ingenuity to create innovative solutions for positive change.

The Lab's Experiments and Projects

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

SJL believes that effective change starts with radically inclusive communication. We seek out the perspectives of artists and entertainers, social workers and community members, politicians, parents, educators, athletes, academics, the elderly, the young, and others in order to examine an issue from all sides and develop workable solutions to solvable problems.

THE WALTER STAFFORD PROJECT: Racial INEQUALITY IN NEW YORK CITY

Based at New York University, this project brings together specialists from a broad spectrum of disciplines to study the historical and ongoing causes, trends, and consequences of racial inequality in New York City. SJL will convene community conversations this spring to discuss the findings presented in the upcoming anthology. Our hope is to impact policy prescriptions and solutions to the many issues presented in the anthology. Walter Stafford Project at NYU »

BUILDING LEADERSHIP

SJL is committed to fostering the future leaders of social justice.  We seek to identify leadership potential at an early age, providing committed students with the tools, mentorship, and support they need to turn their passion and creativity into concrete progress.  SJL is currently building a sustainable progressive leadership program.

MyVote Project

SJL is partnering with Duke University Professor David McAdams and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Sari Kaufman on a website designed to foster voter engagement with non-partisan information on elections, candidates, and the issues they support.

Event organizing

SJL organizes events of all kinds, from forums to block parties, in support of important causes, candidates, and issues. We recently partnered with 777 Urban Media Group on an event at Art Basel in Miami to raise awareness around the recently passed Amendment 4 that reinstates voting rights to felons in the state of Florida. We are planning a similar event this spring in partnership with LargeUp.

campaign consulting

SJL works with political campaigns in a variety of capacities. We recently developed and ran Andrew Gillum’s ‘Bring it Home’ Bus Tour at the end of 2018 Florida gubernatorial campaign primary race. During the Bus Tour, Gillum came up from 4th place to win the Primary. In the general election SJL ran the campaign’s Surrogates Program, bringing 70+ celebrities as well as national political leadership to support Gillum at events and in media appearances.

Voices Heard

SJL supports progressive movements and actions. We believe in showing up to make our voices heard at rallies, protests, marches, picket lines and polls! We work with groups to make their marches and actions as effective as possible.

Personalized Social Justice Branding

SJL believes in the power of matching public figures and organizations with grassroots programs, actions, and communities. We forge mutually beneficial partnerships based on shared convictions, brand alignment, and sustainable levels of commitment.
